Environment Dress is a wearable interface that measures environmental aggressiveness and transforms environmental variables that are imperceptible to our senses into visible signals on the body itself.
We inhabit environments shaped by multiple environmental variables that are constantly changing and that our senses can only partially perceive. Ultraviolet radiation, temperature, noise, atmospheric pressure, and the concentration of certain gases form part of an invisible landscape that influences the characteristics of the spaces we inhabit.
Environment Dress emerged as a tool to expand this perception of the environment. It is an open-source wearable interface, developed using open hardware and software and conceived to be replicated using the digital fabrication tools and processes available in a FabLab. Its design provides access to the processes, components, and knowledge required to build, modify, and adapt the interface.
Equipped with different environmental sensors and conceived as a technological second skin, the interface records the conditions of the user's surroundings in real time, making information that lies beyond the reach of our senses accessible.
The data collected is transmitted wirelessly to a mobile device and sent to an open database, where it is associated with its geographical location. This information can be accessed through the application and web platform developed for the project, allowing the environmental conditions recorded in different locations to be visualised.
The system analyses the data and generates different responses according to the values detected. When certain variables reach specific levels, the interface responds through changes in light, making environmental information visible on the body. This creates a perceptual circuit in which environmental data is captured, processed, and returned to the user in the form of visual stimuli.
Environment Dress proposes an open and replicable tool for environmental perception, in which the body becomes a space of interaction between technology and the environment. Its open-source approach allows the system to be shared, adapted, and transformed, expanding its possibilities for use and experimentation.
