Unexpected Ecosystems is presented as part of Máquina Orgánica, an exhibition exploring relationships between living systems, machines and technologies
In 2023, María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde participated with Unexpected Ecosystems in Máquina Orgánica, a group exhibition held at Teatros del Canal in Madrid as part of the third edition of Canal Connect and curated by Charles Carcopino. The exhibition brought together works by national and international artists exploring contemporary transformations in the relationships between living organisms, machines and technological systems.
Castellanos and Valverde presented Unexpected Ecosystems, an installation in which plants and robotic devices coexist within the same environment. The work investigates relationships between plant organisms and artificial systems through sensors, electronics and robotics, generating a hybrid ecosystem in which the boundaries between the biological and the technological become increasingly permeable.
Máquina Orgánica addressed issues related to artificial intelligence, biotechnology, biorobotics and transformations of living matter, as well as their ecological and bioethical implications. The exhibition featured works by artists including Ralf Baecker, France Cadet, Filip Custic, Yosra Mojtahedi, Mónica Rikić, Scenocosme, Antoine Schmitt and Bill Vorn, among others, bringing together different approaches to the relationships between the living and the artificial.
